A Black Hole

AS seen in the HEARTbeat and the Village Voice

A Black Hole

A black hole is a strange thing in our universe.  It is said, a black hole is created when a supernova collapses on itself and a huge explosion occurs.  The remnants of the event create a hole in space which has an unmeasurable gravitational pull on all matter around it.  Once something is in this gravitational pull, it cannot escape from being sucked in.  What is in the center of a black hole can only be postulated, as no one really knows.  It is impossible at this point to completely understand the so-called “emptiness” of a black hole.

I was thinking, can a black hole exist in humans?  Scientists hypothesize there is nothing but chaos in a universe black hole. To go along with my questions, one would have to look at black.

It was hard for me to understand the color black in school.  We see many colors in our environment.  The color of any object is determined by which part of the light color spectrum is absorbed and which is reflected.  If we see a green object, it means all the light energy of the spectrum is absorbed and the green portion of the spectrum is reflected.  The same holds true for any color under the sun.  Red firetrucks reflect the color red while absorbing the rest of the spectrum.  This leads me to the difficulty of understanding the color black.

We see black because no color is reflected.  It is called an achromatic, without hue, like white or gray.  In other words, all of the color spectrum of light is absorbed.  It does not reflect any color, therefore we see black.

As Christians, we are called to reflect the light of Christ.  Jesus told His disciples, “If you have seen me, you have seen the Father.”  Jesus was telling them they were seeing the same “light” which comes from God the Father when they see Him.  Three particularly knew this to be true when they saw Jesus transfigured – Peter, James, and John.

In heaven there will be no need for the sun or the moon.  John writes in Revelation, “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.”  It does not say the sun and moon will be no more.  It means the light coming from the Lamb, that is Jesus, will be brighter than any sun we can imagine.

Can a black hole exist inside a human?  Yes, it can.  We are born without the light of Christ in us, that is the Holy Spirit.  There is a pulling, or a tugging that goes on in us, a longing for light.  Until it is filled, there is only darkness, and yes, chaos or the absence of peace.

Jesus can fill the black hole in us and give us a light that can shine in the darkness and make the creator of darkness run.  If you have an emptiness in you, fill it completely by asking Jesus to be your light, and He will give you peace!
