Don’t Do It!
Probably like many of you, I had to experience things to learn for myself. Many times my father would tell me not to do something, but yet I proceeded to do the very thing he warned me to not do. As a result, I learned some very hard lessons during my early years.
I can remember one such occasion when I didn’t follow my father’s instruction and warning. I was very young and couldn’t have been more than four or five years old. One day I watched my father replacing some wall receptacles. He would quickly take the face plate off, pop out the receptacle, and install the new one in a few minutes time, with the electricity still powering the receptacle! I found a screwdriver and started to mimic my dad’s actions. He quickly warned me, “Don’t put the screwdriver in the holes of the plug!” As soon as his back was turned, I did exactly that and sparks flew! To this day when replacing a wall receptacle, I check, re-check, and re-check to make sure the power is off to the outlet.
I learned a very valuable lesson that day: Heed the warning of my father. God gives some sound advice to people, but the vast majority fails to heed His words. As a result, people want to ignore His Word when it is contrary to their fleshly desires, or they attempt to change its meaning to meet their needs. There is just such a movement today. “The Old Testament doesn’t apply anymore,” or “Jesus didn’t really mean what He said,” or maybe “That book is just a metaphor.” Society will try to change things to meet the needs groups, social norms, laws, and even the Bible.
God warns us not to misinterpret, or better yet, to change His Word. Through Moses, God warned the people of Israel, “Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord you God that I give you” (Deuteronomy 4:3). To those who did not heed this warning, they died in the wilderness and never saw the Promised Land.
Jesus also gave a warning to not change God’s Word, not even a single word. “I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll.”
God’s Word is real, it is alive, and it is something to be followed. Do not alter it, do not delete from it, and do not add to it to satisfy society! In the end, heeding God the Father’s warning will save your eternal life!
