Women need girlfriends to walk with them through life.

NEWcomers started in January 2005 by Artie Schmeltz, who moved here from Texas.  She was reluctant to leave her grown daughters and all her connections behind, but a wise friend gave her the book "Moving On" by Susan Miller.  Once Artie read the book, she took it to the Mountainside Pastor and suggested he start a class, to which he promptly handed it back to Artie and said, "Go with it" ...

Peggy Hadley was in that first class, also reluctant to leave all behind in Kansas.  When Artie decided to have a second class, she asked Peggy if she would help her, and Peggy's reply was, "No, thank you, the class was great, but I want to go back to Kansas."   After class two, Artie approached Peggy again, only this time she said, "Peggy, I need you to help me."   Peggy agreed but reminded Artie she was going back to Kansas at some time.   Just after Class 14 started, Artie brought the books and set them down in front of Peggy and said, her daughters were starting their families, and she was going back to be with them.  Aghast, Peggy didn't want the program to end, so she took over as facilitator and loved it forward.  We are presently in Class 40 with 40 women in attendance.

Our classes are two hours long.  Lots of discussions and lessons on moving forward in life, along with snacks and guest speakers like the Village Fire Chief, Police Chief, and opportunities to volunteer at places like the animal shelter and Colleen Angel's Tiny Angel Gown Ministry.   FUN Tours are given with shopping in downtown Benton and Hot Springs, and of course, our beautiful Village.   A fabulous carpool tour is given to Petit Jean Mountain and a graduation luncheon to the Lagniappe Tea Room in Hot Springs.

The women bond with their classmates and continue their friendships, making for content and very happy women.

A note from Peggy -

Rita Hoover and Karen Rutan have taken over NEWcomers for me (along with Mona Peterson, who attends another Village church). I will be in attendance with Class #40, and that will be my last class; I retire after that.

Celebrating the Spirit of Volunteering in Hot Springs Village

Hot Springs Village is renowned for its vibrant community spirit, largely driven by the dedication of volunteers who make it a wonderful place to live and grow. The community thrives on the energy and commitment of individuals who dedicate their time to various activities, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie among residents.

Honoring Peggy Hadley: An Icon of Service

Among the many volunteers, Peggy Hadley stands out as a true icon within the village. Her energetic and unselfish nature has left a lasting impact on the community. Peggy's involvement in the NEWcomers program exemplifies her dedication; she has been the driving force behind its success for many years. Although she humbly claims she didn't do it alone, her role as the "spirited leader" has been instrumental in shaping the program's growth and vitality.

Her influence extends across 26 groups, with a 40th group currently in process. Those who have participated in her groups know that Peggy possesses a unique talent for welcoming newcomers and engaging women, whether they are new to the area or long-time residents. Her ability to showcase the beauty and opportunities of the area has helped forge lasting friendships and foster a sense of community.

The Power of Volunteering as a Mission

Volunteering in Hot Springs Village is more than just giving time; it is a mission rooted in love and community spirit. While today we highlight Peggy's remarkable contributions, it is important to remember that every resident has something valuable to offer. Whether it's organizing a Sunday fellowship snack or contributing in any small way, each act of kindness and service makes a difference.

Reflecting on Peggy's impact, consider the lives she has touched. Her efforts have inspired many, bringing joy and fostering long-term friendships among groups that continue to thrive. Her dedication has helped turn acquaintances into lifelong friends, enriching the social fabric of the community.

We thank God that he places people like Peggy in our path through life.  It enriches our life experience.

Thank you, Peggy Hadley!
